What is the degree of automation of the vertical winder

- Apr 22, 2025-

The degree of automation of the vertical winder varies depending on the type, purpose and configuration of the equipment. The overall level of automation is relatively high, which is mainly reflected in the following aspects:

Automatic loading and unloading

Many advanced vertical winders are equipped with automatic loading devices. The material to be wound is automatically transported to the feed port of the winder through conveyor belts, robotic arms or automatic guided vehicles (AGVs). For example, in a production line for winding metal coils, the coils can be accurately delivered to the winder through an automated conveying system, reducing the manual handling process. In terms of unloading, after winding is completed, the winder can automatically unload the finished coil and transfer it to a designated location through a transmission system. Some can also be automatically connected with subsequent packaging equipment, greatly improving production efficiency.

Automatic tension control

As mentioned above, it uses tension sensors and control systems to automatically adjust the tension. During the winding process, the tension sensor monitors the material tension in real time and feeds the data back to the control system. The control system automatically adjusts the motor speed, torque, or friction device pressure according to the preset tension parameters to maintain the tension stability. This automated tension control can accurately maintain the material tension throughout the winding process without frequent manual intervention, ensuring the winding quality.

Automatic correction system

In order to ensure the neatness of winding, vertical winders are usually equipped with automatic deviation correction systems. The system monitors the position of the material edge in real time through edge detection sensors. Once the material is found to be offset, the control system will automatically drive the deviation correction device, such as adjusting the position or angle of the guide roller, to return the material to the correct winding path. This process is automatic and fast, and can effectively prevent uneven edges when the material is wound.

Automatic speed adjustment

The winder can automatically adjust the winding speed according to the material feeding speed, the change of the reel diameter and other factors. In the early stage of winding, the reel diameter is small and the winding speed will be relatively slow; as the winding progresses, the reel diameter gradually increases, and the control system of the winder will automatically speed up the winding speed to keep the linear speed of the material stable. At the same time, it can also automatically match the speed of the upstream unwinding equipment or other links of the production line to ensure the smoothness of the entire production process.

Remote monitoring and automation integration

Some high-end vertical winders support remote monitoring. Operators can remotely view the winder's operating parameters, status, and winding progress through a computer or mobile device. In addition, it can also be integrated with the entire factory's automated production system, receive instructions from the central control system, automatically complete the winding task according to the production plan, and realize intelligent production management.
